Texture

|

Texture is often described as the number of voices (melody lines = voices, not necessarily sung, in the context of texture, instrumental melody lines are called “voices.”) However, texture can also refer to rhythm lines. Texture can refer to layers of melody or rhythm lines In electronic music and contemporary hip hop, the texture may be layered samples and sounds, not melody or rhythm lines, per se. The texture may be described in terms of density (thick, dense, open, thin, etc.) rather than number of independent lines.
